Notes on Piracy
Crew should stay vigilant.  Attacks may be prevented if the pirates are aware that
they have been observed.

Crew should be seen to be constantly moving around the ship, making random patrols.

Crew should increase night watches especially around the stern of the vessel and
particularly between hours 01:00 and 06:00 when most attacks occur.

Crew should close all means of access to the ship, especially access to accommodation
and should block access between the aft deck and the crew areas.

Crew should use lights on deck and over-side at the bow and stern. Searchlights and
flashlights should be available to identify any suspicious activity.

Crew should keep water hoses and other equipment standby and consider the use of
high pressure water hoses in case of attack.

Crew should reduce opportunities for theft by removing all portable equipment from the
deck.

Crew should maintain a constant radio watch with shore / naval authorities in dangerous
areas, and on all distress and safety frequencies.  Master should report any suspicious
movements to the Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC) for the area.

Crew should avoid use of firearms and aggressive behaviour if boarded. Crew should comply
with pirates demands if this is the only safe option by trying to maintain control of navigation.
