Notes on Pilots on board
Master should keep a situation awareness of all activities of the Pilot.  Pilot is always most
knowledgeable about local waters. However, it is the responsibility of the Master and Officer
of the watch to verify position through proper use of charts, radars and other position fixing
devices and follow local rules relating to speed, routing and drafting.

Master should establish proper communication with pilot concerning voyage planning when
a Pilot is on board. Voyage plan should include all important activities starting from the
embarkation until the disembarkation of pilot.

Master should communicate manoeuvring capabilities and characteristics during the voyage
planning stage and discuss these matters with Pilot, as necessary.

Master should communicate with pilot on any relevant matters regarding vessel's voyage and
draft.

Master should mark wheel over points in narrow and shallow waters, either on the chart or
at the radar screen in order to know when points of no return is reached.

Master should ensure that Pilot’s orders are properly followed and should also monitor Pilot’s
activities.

Vessel should be equipped with the necessary updated charts for the intended voyage in
addition to information provided by the Pilot.

Vessel should have clear procedures and instructions to Master’s on what and how to deal
with a Pilot on board. These should be included as part of the ships safety management system.
